I finished high school last year, and I just decide that I wanted to be a fireman as a career. My parents think it’s a good idea, but considering how bad the economy is, and it’s impossible to get a job, I would have no way to afford schooling. I know I can get a grant, or a scholarship, but I would still need a job to pay for books, a car, and insurance for it. My parents know it seems almost impossible to get a job now, and keep suggesting to me join the military for just 2 years and it will also pay for college. Sounds like a good idea, but I don’t want to join just because the economy sucks and I can’t get a job. I rather join a military branch, because I want to, and I wish to serve my country, not because I can’t get a job!
Does anyone have some advice they can give to me about this whole thing?
Joining the military is a personal decision, and it is great that you’re thinking about it. But, it takes a lot of commitment, and it is life-altering (there’s a lot of truth to that break-you-down-build-you-up part of the lore)–so don’t think of it as just a two year commitment, because it will be a very affecting part of your life. It has many good parts, and some not-so-good parts.
I think joining only because it seems like the only option with a bad economy is not a good way to start off–your focus is on a different goal. What you said at the end of your question is very important–*why* you join is a big deal.
Something to think about, however, is that there are positions in the military where firefighting is part of what they do (obviously in a very different way than civil firefighting)–you might want to do research to see how difficult it is to get one of those positions, and if it is something that you could get into.
Otherwise, try and stick it out–the economy is getting somewhat better, if very slowly–there are a lot of grants out there. You could always try going part time to school, or start off at a community college and transfer credits, while working some sort of part-time job. It is do-able, it just might not be very easy.
Only you know what is in your heart, and what you want to do, and where you want to be, and what your goals are. So, actually listen to yourself, and do what is best for you. Sometimes that means sacrificing the short term for the long term, and sometimes it doesn’t, but you’re the only one that can make that decision.
