Marquette High School students receive real-world budgeting experience

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Marquette Senior High School (MSHS) students got the chance to learn about budgeting at a Financial Reality Fair.

These hour-long sessions are put on by the Michigan Credit Union Foundation.

Students log on to an app where they choose an occupation that comes with financial obligations like debt and a credit score. Students then have to decide how to fit the lifestyle they want into their budget by visiting different booths like housing, food and clothing. Students decide between multiple options at each booth on what they want to pay for.

Embers Credit Union Community Engagement Officer Julie Johnson says most students end up going bankrupt.

“They’ll visit, ‘What is the credit union?’ booth. The credit union booth will then aid them in their decisions. Maybe they spent a little bit much on a car payment and they need to maybe take public transportation for a little bit. But it just gives them a– kind of a bite of reality.”

The Financial Reality Fair lasted seven hours on Thursday in the MSHS gymnasium. More than 350 students participated.
