BCD Meetings & Events (BCD M&E) has published its 8th annual What’s Trending 2025 report, outlining key trending themes across meetings and events with global and regional perspectives that will shape the industry in the coming year and impact strategic decision-making.

According to the report, approximately 80% of meetings in Asia Pacific are now taking place face-to-face, with virtual meetings and hybrid events comprising a smaller percentage, largely among clients looking to reduce travel costs.

“As echoed in other regions, clients have higher expectations when it comes to creativity, but are also looking for good value for their spend,” said Sanjay Seth, managing director APAC, BCD Meetings & Events. “Budgets are generally remaining flat for 2025, but due to restructuring among some clients, there’s a lack of clarity on who owns the budget; This is causing confusion and leading to a reduction of meeting and event requests in some areas.”

In parallel, third-party supplier options have expanded, offering greater flexibility for event organizers. However, short lead times remain a challenge, particularly for events where requests for proposals (RFPs) are often needed within just a few days.

Pharmaceutical clients, traditionally more conservative with event budgets, are demonstrating increased caution heading into 2025. This is largely due to several factors, including the end of patent life for certain products, which prompts tighter spending, and a growing preference among healthcare professionals to attend global congresses over company-hosted events.

Despite stagnant budgets, the demand for innovative attendee experiences is growing. Clients who previously hosted simpler events are now looking for more creative solutions to leave a lasting brand impression.

Sri Lanka: A rising incentive destination

The What’s Trending 2025 report also lists Colombo, Sri Lanka as an emerging incentive destination in Asia Pacific. Known for its idyllic beaches and rich 2,000-year-old history, Sri Lanka offers groups the opportunity to explore ancient cities such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, visit the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress, or admire the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.

With a range of luxury accommodations, including beachfront properties like Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort and serene mountain retreats like Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge, Sri Lanka is rapidly becoming a top destination for incentive groups seeking unique cultural experiences combined with luxury.
