If billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban could rewind time to age 16, he knows exactly what side hustle he’d pursue today — AI prompt engineering. Speaking to CNBC Make It, Cuban said that if he had to earn extra, he would teach companies and his fellow people about AI language models like ChatGPT or Gemini from Google. The first step, said Cuban, would be understanding how to write prompts—a question or command given to instruct AI responses. After that, he would help his friends do their school homework using AI. The last thing he would do is apply that knowledge to small- and medium-sized enterprises that are yet to harness the power of AI.

“Doesn’t matter if I’m 16, I’d be teaching them as well,” Cuban told CNBC Make It. He emphasised that even teenagers can find opportunities in the AI space.

Cuban’s hypothetical hustle reflects an emerging tendency that has been more common among young people. A LendingTree study established that over half of the current generation citizens in the United States already hold some form of another job, stating that AI prompt engineering would be a popular niche. It became apparent that with the growth of AI technologies, the necessity of people who would know how to function in collaboration with these tools has increased.

ZipRecruiter data reveals that beginners working in the capacity of AI tutors will receive up to $30000 per year while AI prompt engineers are likely to receive up to $12,9,500 per year. The best part? Neither prior training nor a college degree for that matter is required; however, some online certifications such as Vanderbilt University or IBM can assist with quick training. Even novices can learn the basics in a month.

While Cuban’s idea for an AI side gig might be way more sophisticated than his first actual job, it shows he is willing to work for himself. He cut his entrepreneurial teeth at 12 thereby selling garbage bags around his Pittsburgh neighborhood to buy basketball shoes. As a teenager, he started taking up other economic activities such as selling other items including baseball cards, coins and stamps, which enabled him to pay for his education at Indiana University.

While in college, he was a bartender, hosted paid entry parties, and even gave dance classes. Thus, his desire for the business took him to purchase MicroSolutions, selling it for $6 million in 1990, and later on founding Broadcast.com which was sold to Yahoo for approximately $5.7 billion in 1999 making him a billionaire.

Today, Cuban’s net worth is $5.7 billion, according to Forbes, and he spends most of his time promoting Cost Plus Drugs, the internet-based pharmacy with its goal of making prescription medicines more accessible at an affordable price.

“I was a hustler … I have always been selling,” Cuban shared during a 2016 episode of Shark Tank. “That was just my nature.” Now, he is promoting the younger generation to redirect that energy towards the changing and evolving field of AI.
